TANZANIA POLICY REFORMS AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE: Where Have We Come From and Where Are We Now?

Tanzania Policy Reforms and Economic Performance: Where Have We Come from and Where Are We Now? is a comprehensive summary of key developments in the Tanzanian economy from independence to date. The book is a valuable asset to secondary school and university students, and academicians interested in the trend of Tanzania’s economic performance since independence.
In Chapter One, the book discusses the economic turbulences of the first decade of independence (1970s) which were brought about by many factors including global oil crises, bad weather which resulted in food grain shortages and the war against Idi Amin of Uganda. Chapter Two analyses both domestically initiated and externally supported policy reforms (popularly known as of Structural Adjustment Programmes, SAPs) put in place, supposedly to rescue the Tanzanian economy from the dire state of the late 1980s.
Chapter Three covers successor policy reforms to the failed SAPs, under the umbrella term Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) that went all the way through from Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) to National Strategy Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP I), better known by its Kiswahili acronym of MKUKUTA (Mkakati wa Kukuza Uchumi na Kuondoa Umaskini Taifa) I and II. Cross cutting issues under policy reforms, such as gender, environmental and climate change, green economy, technology and unemployment are discussed in Chapter Four, while Chapter Five highlights strategies for balanced reform programmes.
