Global Poverty: The Case for Sub-Saharan Africa

A study of poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa by Ambassador Matern Y. C. Lumbanga, drawing on his career in the Tanzanian government service and international development organisations. The book explores the meaning of poverty, its multiple manifestations, and how it may be overcome or mitigated, anchored around three questions: the deep causes of endemic, systemic, and pervasive poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa; which stakeholders can contribute to its reduction, and how; and the policy options available to address it. Comprehensive and proactive, the volume insists on the multi-dimensional nature of poverty and the imperative of multi-dimensional, multi-sectoral responses. Lumbanga served as Tanzania’s longest-serving Cabinet Secretary (spanning the presidencies of Mwinyi, Mkapa, and Kikwete) and as Tanzania’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.
