The autobiography of Edwin Mtei, first Governor of the Bank of Tanzania and architect of the country’s central banking system, Secretary-General of the East African Community, and Minister of Finance in Julius Nyerere’s government. Born in 1932 in Marangu, Moshi, Mtei was raised by his single mother in a grass-thatched hut, attended a ‘bush’ school at Ngaruma Lutheran Parish, herded goats after lessons, and went on through Old Moshi and Tabora Secondary schools to Makerere University College, graduating in 1957. The memoir spans colonial Tanganyika of the 1930s-1950s, his years in senior government service, and his entry into multi-party politics in 1992, when he founded Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), the Party for Democracy and Development.
