Phrasal Verbs

A learning aid for Kiswahili-speaking learners of English, written by Kevin L. Foyle. Foyle first came to Tanzania in 1962 to teach English at Umbwe Secondary, Kibosho, and soon began to appreciate the difficulty Kiswahili learners experience when choosing the small words that do so much more work in English than in Kiswahili. One of the most well known is kuingia katika nyumba being translated as to enter into the house instead of to enter the house. In 2000 Foyle decided to provide an easy-to-use remedy. The result is Phrasal Verbs, a collection of sentences with an East African background that require the addition of one or two simple words such as to, in, for, etc., to complete the meaning. Due to the idiomatic tendency of phrasal verbs, the meaning can change with time, hence the regular updating of this highly popular work, currently in its fourth edition. Teachers at all levels will find it especially helpful.
