Aspects of Colonial Tanzania History

A collection of essays by Dr. Lawrence E. Y. Mbogoni examining the lives and experiences of both colonisers and the colonised in what is today Tanzania. The volume explores topics largely overlooked by earlier scholarship, including excessive alcohol consumption (the sundowners), adultery and violence among colonial officials, attitudes to inter-racial relationships, game-poaching, European settler vigilantism, radio broadcasting, film production, and the character of Arab slavery in Zanzibar. A featured case study is the 1955 trial of Oldus Elishira, a Maasai man accused of killing the European settler Harold M. Stuchbery, which illuminated the clash between Maasai and colonial conceptions of justice. Mbogoni is Associate Professor of African History at William Paterson University of New Jersey.
