Living with Cancer by Prof. Mark Mwandosya to Launch in Dar es SalaamA powerful memoir on courage, chronic illness, and public service

Dar es Salaam – Mkuki na Nyota Publishers is proud to announce the official launch of Living with Cancer– Diaries of a Multiple Myeloma Patient, a deeply personal and courageous memoir by Professor Mark Mwandosya, a respected Tanzanian academic, statesman, and former cabinet minister.

The launch will take place on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, from 15:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs, at Four Points by Sheraton (New Africa Hotel), Dar es Salaam.

The launch will be graced by Hon. Doto Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, as Guest of Honor. The event will also feature remarks from Dr. Clara Chamba, a renowned hematologist and lecturer at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), who will reflect on the landscape of cancer care in Tanzania and the need for stronger research, early diagnosis, and equitable clinical support.

In this poignant and unflinching account, Prof. Mwandosya documents his lived experience with Multiple Myeloma, a rare and chronic form of blood cancer. Through intimate reflections, he shares the physical, emotional, and spiritual journey of navigating illness, while offering messages of resilience, dignity, and hope. Living with Cancer is not just a personal narrative, it is a call to compassion, public awareness, and patient-centered care.

“Being diagnosed with cancer should not be considered a death sentence,” writes Prof. Mwandosya,
“it is about living and finding strength and meaning even in illness.”

The book also features a powerful foreword by Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, Minister of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania, who highlights its value as a tool for both personal inspiration and policy reflection. In her words:

“The book has a special message to the health policy makers and practitioners […it sparks] a renewed zeal to strengthen our efforts at containing the ever-increasing burden of cancer; including interventions for an early diagnosis of cancer as well as ensuring that eventually all the required clinical care interventions are available within the country.”

This endorsement underscores the significance of Living with Cancer as both a medical memoir and a vital contribution to national discourse on health system reform, empathy in care, and patient experience.

This is an invitation-only event that will bring together leading figures in medicine, public policy, academia, civil society, and the media — united by a commitment to storytelling as a vehicle for healing, advocacy, and systemic transformation.
