A collection of quotations from the speeches and writings of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, compiled by Christopher C. Liundi. Nyerere was the first President of the United Republic of Tanzania and founder of the nation, elected democratically in 1961 and remaining in power for more than two decades. He was a gifted and morally upright man, a true son of Africa, a Pan-Africanist, nationalist, charismatic orator, diplomat, and above all a teacher. He chose the title Mwalimu, teacher. Throughout his term of office, he gave hundreds of speeches, prepared and extemporaneous. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, founded by Mwalimu Nyerere himself in 1996, has assembled his speeches and writings into books. The quotations in this volume are drawn from the Freedom series and his university lectures, arranged by theme: Philosophy of Life, Equality of Man, Colonialism, Tanzania’s Revolution, Democracy, Self-reliance, Rural Development, Non-alignment, African Unity, the United Nations, Leadership, and Education. Compiler Christopher C. Liundi was Regional Commissioner of Dodoma, Kigoma, Arusha, and Dar es Salaam (1981-1990) and Ambassador to France, Spain, Portugal, Ethiopia, and Djibouti (1990-1998).
